My question is not about how to update an application's config file during run-time, but how to invalidate the cached copy so that if a change to the config file is made, the application can use the new data without being restarted. Is there a programmatic way to invalidate the cached copy of an app.config file? In the "old" .INI file days, there was a work-around to this caching. How do we do it today? Help is appreciated.

Hi, I have a Windows Service running (made in VB.NET), and wanted to be able to change from time to time some parameters by changing them in the App.config. But it seems that the application doesn't use the changed values in the App.config, but continue to use the values that were there during start-up. Is there a way to let the application use the new values in the App.config? Is there kind of some 'refresh' function that I should...

Hi, I have created a custom Config handler for reading a custom config section in my .config file(s) It works very well! I have placed a web.config in my root directory and then I use sub files in sub diretories overriding various settings in the config file. Very nice strategy which really makes it easy to customize generic applications.

Hi all, I was playing with the new ConfigurationManager class in the Feb CTP drop of VS 2005 and I noticed that if you make changes to the configuration inside of an ASP.NET page, those changes are immediately written to the web.config when you say Configuration.Save() but if I then try to access them, they do not appear to refresh within the request. Not completely unexpected I suppose but I was wondering if anyone knew if this is...

I've created another .config file (site.config) to avoid restarting when web.config is changed, but changes in this new .config file only take effect when the application restarts. I would like to know how to view this changes or restart it manually. Thanks Pietro

Hi: I have written several web applications that obtain their connection strings from the web.config file. This is very easy to use and it makes it easy to move an app from development into production. I'm in the process of writing a site that will have lots of traffic so I'm trying to save resources everyplace that I can. My question is - do the web.config app settings get loaded once when the

What's the cost of using a web.config key in a web method? Is the value cached at start up? Or at first run? Or read on each access? Is web.config always "read off the disk" or can the file be cached? I'm debating putting in a AppSetting entry versus hard coding for a web service handling many hundreds of requests per hour.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
