Because the user either does not have Excel installed on his computer or
does not have "browse in same window" enabled and has "confirm open after
download" enabled for the xls extension in his file association properties,
possibly. Either that, or you're returning the xls file as an unknown file
type, but if you're just linking right to an xls file on the server, that
shouldn't be the case.
Whether xls opens in the browser or downloads for opening in Excel is a
client-side settings.

I have two links on a page.
One goes to an excel spreadsheet and the other goes to a powerpoint.
If you click on the excel it prompts you to down load it or open it.
IF you click on the powerpoint.....it opens it in the browser.....why does
that happen?
