Security for Access Database

42 New Member
My division is having a problem wtih access database security. Weekly someone has access the databases and deleted tables and linking. Typically, there is a front-end and back-end database versions. The linking between the databases are getting deleted and tables are being deleted even subform linking are being removed.

What can I do to resolve this issue? We have hidden the Database Windows, but still no success.

Have you considered issuing a copy of the FE database as an MDE or ACCDE (depending on the version)?

Majority of the database are still in the Microsoft 2003/2000 format.

An MDE is a compiled version of the MDB where the structure of the file can't be modified. This of course doesn't prevent someone from going to the back end and mucking about there. Since you're using 2003 and if you plano n sticking with Access, you may have to set up user level security.

Thank you. We were trying to avoid since we dealing with over 20 database and 40 plus users.

The BE can be made to require a password for access (small 'a'). This would stop users from accessing it and fiddling where they are not supposed to. Any linked tables would have to be set up from the FE to include this password, and the FE can be converted to an MDE before issuing to the users.

Access Security should be avoided where possible as it is not supported in newer versions. Use of this facility will ensure these databases cannot ever be upgraded to the newer versions. Not a good approach I would suggest.
