MS access has encountered a problem and needs to close

374 Contributor
Hi all,

I am receiving this error every so often when I close my front end database that I have been developing a bit more before deploying.

I thought it was the sign of small corruption so I carried out a decompile and recompile then compact and repair. The issue still intermitently occurred.

I then exported everything to a fresh database and all was well but then it came back once again.. off and on. Not every time.

I think it is only happening when I open up my modules and then close them but I can not be sure I havent been able to trace an exact reason.

I was a bit confused by all this and then realised the same thing was happening with ANOTHER database I started working on. I figure this cant be a corruption on two databases so I am currently trying a fresh install of MS Office to see if this will combat the issue which I dont think it will as I have already done the repair for office with no luck.

Any advice on this?

I get that message sometimes if I edit a Forms module, while the form is running. So I have completely stopped doing code edits while any forms are open. That seems to have solved the problem for me. It would see this issue especially if I have forms with OLE objects in them, such as a treeview, or listview, or if the forms uses a Class for something.

I have narrowed this error down further.

This only ever occurs when I open up the vba editor and exit the database.

These are the scenarios to create the error:

open a blank database with just 1 vba module inside.
open up vba editor for that module
close vba editor
close database
Error message

if i do not open up the vba editor and i just quit the database i get 0 errors.

This does not just happen for the 1 module, it can happen for any modules I use and any code I enter in a module, even a simple msgbox.

(sorry for lack of punctuation/capitals etc my keyboard is on the blink!)

The only thing I can think of is that you may have a compatibility /corruption problem with one of the standard libraries like the VisuaL Basic for Applications library.

Do you by any chance have more than one version of Access installed? I seem to remember having issues like this years ago when I had more than one version of Access installed on the same OS.

If the problem does lie with the libraries I suspect a reinstall won't fix it. You would have to completely uninstall MS Access and then reboot and reinstall it.

Outside of the forms issue that smiley already mentioned I vaguely remember getting this error some years ago and my object modules would break network connection with the related objects. That is I couldn't view the code for my form even though I could see it listed on the objects list in the editor. The error would say network connection broken and it would happen after the access msg saying it needed to close. If I remember correctly I had to find and install all the sp's and various updates for that version and the problem eventually resolved itself.

Don't know if any of this helps but it's worth seeing if there are any updates for your version available that you haven't installed.

Mary,

As you suggested it seems to definitely be a corruption within my installation. I have moved the database to a different computer and there is no issues.
