if then statements

I have a form that has a field start date and a field days active. I
want to create an if statement
If (start date <#10/1/06# then days active = (date() - #10/1/06#)
elseif (start date #9/30/06# tthen days active = date() - start
date)
end if

I have something wrong, but I can't figure out what - any help or tips
would be greatly appreciated.

Use the DateDiff( ) function to find the interval between two dates.
If there is a space in a field name, then enclose the field name in
brackets, for example: [start date]. Where is this code? In
the .afterupdate event of [start date]?

d = #9/30/2006#
NumDays = Date - IIF(d < #10/1/2006#,#10/1/2006#,d)
? numdays

d = #9/30/2007#
NumDays = Date - IIF(d < #10/1/2006#,#10/1/2006#,d)
