Can we use ms excel or ms access to make a software of accounting(balance sheets)?

I have used excel at very beginners level i.e. for tables etc

I want to know that can I use excel or access to form a software for accounting cycle?
If yes then which one is better?

for making balance sheets ,income statement , General Journal entry

Actually , I have to make a software in which user can input the General journal
entries and can see its trial balance, income statement etc

It can be done in either. However I would look at the amount of data you are going to be storing. If the journal records are going to be in the thousands I would go with Access as it is easier to calculate large amounts of data. Neither prospect is easy however. In Excel you will need to get comfortable with the use of formulas and references and probably some VBA and in Access there is also a lot of work involved.
