A qiuestion for the community

I've recently joined several others in attempt to discourage Steve Santos
from advertising his PC Datasheet business on CDMA. Among the hundreds of
professional consultants who contribute to CDMA, Steve is the only one that
persistently violates the charter prohibition on advertising. I think
ignoring Steve's actions threatens the survival and continued success of
CDMA.

Despite his advertising, foul language and name calling, if a significant
percentage of the CDMA regulars would prefer that I stop, I will.

What do you think?

As an uninvolved lurker who works with Access on and off I would say
keep up the good fight. I am disgusted with the behavior of Steve. His
language, his personal attacks, his despicable childish actions are a
blight on us all. I can't imagine anyone doing business with someone
like that.

So keep up the good work - maybe he'll get the message or just leave.

Is there any point? He clearly intends to continue and I fear that attempts
on here to persuade him otherwise will be futile and merely fan the flames.
You can't teach someone intelligence and I think that the only way he will
be stopped is with help from his ISP. How likely is that? Not very IMO.

I think that we will just have to hope that all other ng users do not follow
his lead and instead continue to respect the charter (and other users) and
not fill it with spam. At the end of the day, if someone wants to hire a
developer they're hardly going to come here regardless of what he may claim.

Oh and there's just a little suspicion I have that the whole thing is a huge
troll and that we've all been "had" :o) On the other hand I have an image
of a fat bearded bloke saying things to himself like "I will return to my
comic book store where I dispense the insults rather than absorb them".

My vote would be for you to simply post a short, simple, non-inflammatory
message in response to any such post that crosses the "thou shall not advertise"
line and then leave it at that. This message could include a link to a page
that describes the history and nature of your cause. It's purpose should be to
inform the OP, not to berate the advertiser.

NO reponse from Steve following such a post should be responded to. It is the
fact that each and every one of these posts devolves into shouting match threads
that I find distasteful. Make the post and then drop it.

Actually a page that highlighted some of the questions that Steve has *asked*
over the years should be enough to deter anyone from paying for his services.

I do not believe we will be able to convince him to stop, but we should be
able to convince others not to follow in his footsteps.

He is the poster child for bad newsgroup behaviour.

Indeed.

pc datasheet is a boil on the ass of cdma, but the back and forth
banter is making everyone involved look ridiculous.

Nov 23 '05 #9
As a newbie to this particular newsgroup but a veteran of others, I'd
like to point out that this newsgroup has much less spam and
advertising than many others. You've done a remarkable job of keeping
the discussions about Access. That said, I think Rick's idea is a good
one. If implemented, it will kind of mark all of pc datasheet's posts.
It could even become a search marker (i.e. "Do you want to see all the
posts by the guy behind pc datasheet? Search for this particular phrase
from Keith's responses").

To be more explicit, my vote is to continue the effort. A desperate
office worker who has bosses breathing down his neck even though he
doesn't know much about Access could potentially go for pc datasheet's
line and end up with problems.

I intend this to be the last time in this thread where I reply to Steve...
One get's tired of this kind of false and very mean accusations <sigh ....>.

I *did* send ONE email to Steve's office indeed ...
Look at the thread: "Checkboxes and Option Groups"

In that thread I said to Steve:
"If you are interested contact me and I will send you a screenshot."

Steve replied:

************************************************

So I did send a screenshot to Steve's office ...
"Steve,
As promised a screenshot,
<Screenshot>
If you stop your advertising you can have the code for free."

And I also replied to Steve here in the groups with the same message:
"I just did send the screenshot to you.
As I said in the mail: If you stop your advertising you can have the code for free !"

He did *not* answer this. So my conclusion was (here in cdma):Since I don't hear from you again, I guess your are not interested in free
code or free support?

So I never have been sending email*s*. I see only ONE mail to resource@pcdatasheet in my Outbox.
As I recall I was even hesitating sending Steve the screenshot because I choked on the address ("resource..." sic!!)

That's the way it was until Duane Hookum and Doug Steele started harassing
my posts and encouraged Arno R to get back into the foray. Then Arno R
started tracking every one of my posts and sending emails to my office.
Dimwit John Marshall and Keith Wilby joined Arno R harassing my every post.
And lately you started harassing my posts.

I am not going to put up with all the crap from all of the above. As I have
said before I am approaching helping 1050 newsgroup posters for reasonable
fees and I will continue helping. I don't discourage anyone from seeking
help from the newsgroups and in fact I encourage people to use the
newsgroups. I AM NOT trying to "steal" users away from the newsgroups. It's
just that some users need and WANT a place to turn to for special help and
over the past four years plus I have provided them a resource to go to and I
will continue to be there for users in the future who WANT a place to turn
to.

I'm the first to want to put an end to this nonsense. So if you and all the
others mentioned in the first paragraph quit harassing me and Arno R quits

to datasheet in a thread, using a single from ID that you could easily
killfile? I'm not sure how significant the length of your history in CDMA
is, but as a regular, your opinion certainly matters.

Nov 23 '05 #30
Randy,

Are you showing your true colors here???

Six hours ago you posted:
"Steve, what do you say we put an end to this nonsense? Be reasonable. Go
back to your old simplified sig line. Let's get back to what this newsgroup
is all about, helping one another with Access issues."

To which I replied and you never responded back.

Now you post this and it seems contrary to your earlier post. It doesn't
appear you were sincere at all earlier given that you did not respond to my
reply to your earlier post and given your response here to David.

If you're goign to do that, please do it the way Arno has, and use a
special return address for those posts so those who want can simply
killfile those and never see them.

That seems reasonable. Certainly those who read CDMA regularly know about
Steve, there's no need to inform them. Those that wish can simply
killfile
those messages.

Nov 23 '05 #31
Steve,

Your response made your position entirely clear. There is no point in
attempting to reason with you. I won't be replying to you any longer. It
simply wastes bandwidth and clutters the newsgroup.

I hope that Arno, John and the others will do the same.

I (we if others wish to) will be posting the simple clarification message,
like before, in response to your advertising message, as suggested by Rick
and others.

If it doesn't stop, I'll killfile all the people who are involving

David has nothing to worry about. He is a long time contributor that knows
how to respect the newsgroup. He is just annoyed having
to put up with the extra traffic on the newsgroup that was instigated by
your lack of respect for the newsgroup.

I have no problem with the regulars killfiling me. They know you are the
cause of the problem. If you want, please add me to your killfile.

As stated many times before, you can easily stop this by respecting the
newsgroup and stop using the newsgroups to solicit business.

So here is the solution. Accept this offer and call a truce. Forget
the past and try again.

Have a trial period until the end of the year.
1 Steve, go back to the way it was before and, for the trial, ignore

Hi,

Not sure why the length of time that someone has been around is
relevant? And I doubt he has been around longer than me (unless you
mean on this board) as I have almost reached "Unbelievably Old" status!
<G> I've been reading this newsgroup since 98 (being an idiot, I had
little knowledge to share; but I learned a lot). More importantly, I
was asked to vote to continue or stop this nonsense - I chose to
exercise my franchise.

Thanks Jim, steve is not being honest (and this is not the first time).

Since these messages are in response to his behaviour, he has had it in his
power to stop this along time ago, but he chose to use these newsgroups to
make money, while others continue to try to help other users with no
expectation of compensation.

The issue here is more than just the diatribe after the sigline. Steve has
been using these newsgroups to solicit work. I only post against his
messages when his advice to the OP contains a "call me" message or is
passing bad information. On some of my replies to these message I do take a
shot at what he writes after his sigline.

So if steve stops trying to lure users from the newsgroup for his own gain
and simplifies his sigline down to a single URL (as he has forced one user
to do), this whole matter will end.

PC Datasheet, although I am apparently unfortunate to share your given
name, have you realized that by posting such inflammatory things with
an advertisement for your company in your signature that you're
probably hurting your business? If I were going to purchase services
from someone I saw on a newsgroup, I wouldn't do so from the a person
who I knew was heavily insulting other posters and in general acting as
a child would. I would choose a poster who has shown that they are
considerate and professional. 'Considerate' and 'professional' are not
adjectives I would use to describe your performance so far.

Note that I'm not looking to jump into this ridiculous war: everyone
has the right to post in the newsgroups after they check the 'I agree
to these terms of service' box. However, advertising for personal gain
on a board meant for free help to those who want it is a rather low
thing to do. Personally, I think it would be nice if you stopped
advertising on this particular board.

The tips have been "coming soon" for years.

Jim,

Take a look at my reply to Randy's offer. I took the offer as a sincere
offer in trust and said I am the first to want to put an end to the nonsense
and I wanted to just go back to the way it was before. As it turned out
Randy's offer was not sincere and he showed he is not a person that can be
trusted. Five hours later he is recruiting for a campaign to continue to
harass me and he said he is joining Arno R and his goons to track all my
posts.

Take a look at the immediate response you got from noneother than John
Marshall dwt (sic dimwit). It's obvious he is not going to stop polluting
the newsgroups with his worthless garbage. Immediately after you posted I
got a derogatory email at my office from Arno R and another suspicious email
that I believe was sent by Keith Wilby. So you see Arno R and his goons have
no desire to stop polluting the newsgroups with their worthless garbage.

Go back over the past month or so and see how many contributory responses
were made by these dimwiteers. You will not need anything else than your
fingers on one hand. They are on their own joy ride at the expense of the
newsgroups and don't give a damn about the newsgroups. Take a look at
Salad's advise to Arno R to grow up and get a life. Arno R's ego couldn't
take that! Look at Arno R's response to David Fenton. I wouldn't be
surprised David has not gotten any unwanted email from these characters.
