Autonumbers: Retrieve unused no's

I have an autonumber field that provides sequential Quote numbers for each
entry in a form.
If an entry begins but then the user wants to cancel the entry, the Cancel
button simply clears all fields. However, the number created in the
autonumber field can never again be re-used for the next entry.
Q: How can I retrieve that unused number so I can use it for the next record
entry ?

Compact the database everytime a person cancels out. Play a WAV file
that blasts AAAUUUUUUUGGGAAAAAAAAAHHHH AAAUUUUUUUGGGAAAAAAAAAHHHH over
the company speakers until everybody is out. Once the compact is
complete, give an ALL CLEAR shout.

That should work.

If you want sequential numbers, without breaks, don't use autonumbers.
Go to Google Groups for Access newsgroups and you'll find the same 1000+
solutions for this same problem.
