Is there a way to lock certain cells in a MS access table from editing?

Not directly on the table, no. You would normally base a form on the
table/query and set the appropriate object properties. Unless of course you
want some users to have edit permissions and some not, in which case you'd
need to apply user-level security. If you're new to Access then you might
want to get up to speed before you broach the security aspect, it can bite
you when you least expect it!

Just out of curiosity...does user security work pretty well? For those
that have had experience with it.

Yes it works very well, but it is not immune to determined hackers.
