Most typical office networks are rated at 100Base-T.
The very much older ones are 10 x slower, and rated at 10 BaseT
And, (not very common yet), is the new 1 m-bit (1000Base-T) networks.
Likely, if you are talking about a standard network, you probably got the
100 guy.
As for performance, we can assume you have (what any multi-user setup has);
Split database, with the front end (FE) (preferable a mde) on EACH
workstation.
The back end (BE) on the shared folder.
The next thing I assume you check out is to have a persistent connection
from the FE to the BE at all times. Doing this should restore your
performance.
If the persistent connection trick don't work, then check out the following
list of things from Tony's fab list of things and settings that (might..but
not always) bite your performance (ie: on some networks, your application
works good..and on others...it does not...).
