Evaluating a Network

I've written a multi-user database application, and it is dog slow. The
thing is, this application isn't much different from apps I've written for
other clients, and they've been fast. As a result, I've come to suspect the
network.

My question: How can I measure the speed of the network, and where can I
find benchmarks for comparison?

I have floated trial balloons about collectively writing an app to
gather performance stats. No takers.

Run some tests on another network.

Most typical office networks are rated at 100Base-T.

The very much older ones are 10 x slower, and rated at 10 BaseT

And, (not very common yet), is the new 1 m-bit (1000Base-T) networks.

Likely, if you are talking about a standard network, you probably got the
100 guy.

As for performance, we can assume you have (what any multi-user setup has);

Split database, with the front end (FE) (preferable a mde) on EACH
workstation.
The back end (BE) on the shared folder.

The next thing I assume you check out is to have a persistent connection
from the FE to the BE at all times. Doing this should restore your
performance.

If the persistent connection trick don't work, then check out the following
list of things from Tony's fab list of things and settings that (might..but
not always) bite your performance (ie: on some networks, your application
works good..and on others...it does not...).

http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/performancefaq.htm

And, just in case you were not talking about a LAN...but actually are
working on a WAN, then read the following article of mine for solutions on
this:

Another option is to use some type of packet sniffer (Etherreal is an
open-source option used with WinPCAP) to look at the network at the
packet level. That may shed some light on the problem.

Have you deleted and recreated the table links in the front end once
it's installed on the target network?
