First, of course windows xp is a complete different operating system..one
that attaches security settings to every file on the system (win98 had no
such system). So, from a "difference" point of view the difference in
systems is huge.
I remember walking up to a server, copying a file to the desktop on the
server, and then copying the file to a shard folder for everyone on the
network. Guess what, that shared folder had complete open permissions..but
that silly little file I copied to the folder could NOT be accessed by
anyone. Of course, the problem here was that when I copied the file to the
server's desktop..it inherited the security settings that the server had.
Even more strange is was when I went home and ftp'ed the file to the same
directory..everyone could use the file!
My only point here is that the difference the file systems from win98 to
winxp are really very huge.
Of course, with all that security checking..then file connecting is VERY
SLOW. The solution (9 out of 10 times) is simply to KEEP a connection opened
to the database. That means the front end needs to open any table on the
back end..and KEEP it open. (this thus keeps the file open..and thus all the
extra huge security stuff does not occur when you open a table).
Give the above trick a try..and report back here.
Also, check out the above trick..and few other pointers to get your speed
back up to normal at the following link..it is real gem:
