Slow down after design changes

Using Access 2002, after making design changes over 30 minutes or so, I want
to save my project.
I close the project (keeping Access open) and save. Then when I reopen the
project, it takes over 50 seconds and sometimes I even get the 'Not
Responding' message in the toolbar.
If I do the same thing but close and reopen Access, the project opens in 5
seconds.

A similar problem occurs when I try to open the SaveAS dialog when repairing
and compacting.

Once in and running (even after a long delay), the project seems fine. Even
complex queries are running at normal speed.

The problem seems to be confined to file accessing stuff???
Aparently, my project is doing something which is slowing things down, but
what?

I've looked at all Tony Toew's performance recommendations, and implemented
those which are relevant.

The project and data file are on the same local drive.

Any ideas?
