Back End Access DB - should the Front End contain temporary tables

119 New Member
Hi,

I am experimenting with using a back-end for a database I am designing.

Three of the tables in the back-end contain information that is (currently) updated on a record by record basis. I am wondering, given that there are so many calculations and insert/update queries, whether it would be "better" to create three temp tables in the front end, store the data in the temp tables during the calculation, and then move it over in one step.

Thanks,

Sounds like a very good idea.

I would put my temporary tables in a separate MDB and delete it when I was done with it. That keeps the bloat in one place that is deleted.

I am using SQL 7 with an MS Access 2000 MDB front end, using bound forms with ODBC linked tables. In one form, the user needs to be able to check a box to select one or more records. This is accomplished with a local table containing two fields: the primary key value of the SQL table and a boolean field used for the check box. Since the local table used to contain the boolean field is local to the MDB file, the result is a heterogeneous...

I manually split my database - in a blank database, I copied all the forms, reports, etc. and linked to the tables in my original database. The front end has grown to 12,818kb and the back end, where my tables are, is only 6,472kb. How can this be? Does the front end need to be compressed? I thought if the data is actually being stored somewhere else, it wouldn't need to be compressed. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, JD

Hi: I have an application that has a back end and a front end. I need to add a table which is identical to one in the back end, and then use it for a temporary holing place form some records. I have done the following: .. Copied the table in the back end and given the copy a new name .. Created a table with the identical name to the back end copy in the front end .. Used the linkage process to link the table reference in the front end...

Hi Everyone.. Been forever since I've posted to the Access newsgroups, and even longer since I've needed to post a question, but I've never had to use or try Access on a Terminal Server so I'm hoping to Brain Scrape some info from those of you that have. Schema: MS Access 2000 .adp sitting on a Terminal Server with SQL Server Database backend.

Dear all I'm well into designing my first ever Access database which is currently about 13 megs (.mdb file) containing data on progress and attainment of approx 500 students. What I want to know is this: to make the database available to approx. 30 colleagues on the school intranet, do I need to change it into a .mdw file and give everyone a login name and password, or can multiple users open the .mdb file at the same time? I'm on...

Hello there. I have a question somewhat related to this topic, and I don't know where else to go. I hope somebody can help. I've created a database in access, that I'd like to share with less than 10 users. I'd like each user to see only some of the records in the database. So for example, if I have eight users in eight countries, I want each of them to only see information for their country. I was told that the easiest way to do...

An application I wrote has been deployed on Citrix, and the Citrix admin tells me all users run the same .mde file. There aren't a lot of concurrent users, but even 2 could be cause for concern. I think the use of globals is worrisome in this case. Anybody have any experience with Access on Citrix? (Al Kallal already griped me out about globals, but if he has anything new to add I'm all ears).

I have used Access frontend with SqlServer backend combination for a number of years. In the easy 'oldfashioned' way using DAO and odbc linked tables. Works fine within limits. Now I'm facing the situation where there will be a 3 base tables that will be used constantly: - one of the tables will grow rapidly and can become hugh (think of 'hundredthousands'). - one of the tables is a sort of 'rights table' in wich a username determines...

Excuse my noobness. I am managing an access database that is shared by 4 users. Management does not want to use any technologies outside of access for this application (no SQL Server, etc). I have split the database into front end and back end databases and put the front end on each of the users' computers. All users can open the front end simultaneously, but once somebody updates data in the form, the back end locks up. What I...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
