I have a client who is having problems opening up queries in design mode. When the datafile that the query is looking at is in use by someone else, it takes up to a couple of minutes to open.
I am pretty sure this is not a network problem or a computer speed problem, as they are using gigabit LAN and the database is being stored on a brand new zeon server with 2 gig of RAM, which is not used for anything else!
He thought it might be due to antvirus software scanning the file while opening it, but I've added the databases to the exclusion list and it's still as slow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

By datafile do you mean an access table or an odbc linked table.
It is slow just opening it in design mode, without trying to change anything!

In the database design window. Click on the table and click design. If it is a linked table it will tell you as it will warn you that it can't be modified.
You said that other user could be accessing the data. Do you know how the user is doing this. They could be opening the data exclusively which would lock it to other users.
In truth there are a lot of possible solutions to your problem and you may not be able to discover the cause without calling in someone who knows access and if there is a backend database that could be causing the problem. The server could be restricting access to the data.
Wouldn't any of these problems simply cause the database to refuse to open at all? The problem here is that if the database is not being viewed, it opens fine in design mode, but if someone else in the office is viewing the database (just looking at data) then it takes much longer to open, although it does eventually open it.

Does it always take the same amount of time when it is delayed, or is it possible that it is waiting for a particular situation on a remote PC to resolve before allowing it to move on?
For instance, another user may have a record (or whole table even) locked and the 'designer' may only get access when they have moved on.
