WARNING: Relationships not imported with data

A while back I imported tables to a new database via Files-->Get
External Data --> Import...

All was well for several months, and then the database started behaving
badly in a couple of ways, including slow (actually speed was fine when
users opened database, then deteriorated after a few minutes of normal
use) and errors when trying to enter data. Specifically, this appears
when entering data in a subform, even when an individual is the only
one on the system: The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the
process because you and another user are attempting to change the same
data at the same time. (Error 3197) Then #ERROR appears in the fields,
but after going to another record and coming back, the data is in
place.

In poking around, I realized that there were no relationships set on
the data. After hours and hours of mucking around and trying to
recreate past operations, I found what is likely the sticking point.

The data table had a linked table which no longer had a valid path.
I'd ignored the "<Path> is not a valid path. Make sure that the path
name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on
which the file resides" message since that table was obsolete.
HOWEVER, I now realize that this dud table apparently caused the loss
of all relationships. If I recreate the situation but without
selecting the dud table, all is fine. FWIW, I should mention that I was
importing to a newer version of Access.

So from now on I'll assume things went badly if I see any kind of error
message while importing. And if I remember to be meticulous I'll look
for relationships after I import data. (But what else should I check
for? Indexes? Other table properties? Who knows.)

And I wonder if the problem amounts to more than just missing indexes.
Not that I expect to ever know.

when you are importing tables theres an advanced button which opens an
area with a check box for importing relationships.. .

spilt milk!

you are going to have to take a copy of the database and work on fixing
the data offline. sounds like more than referential integrity though,
you could have corrupted data. decompile, compact and repair and
manually fix referential integrity. depending on the size of the
database you are working with this could take time... use unmatched
query wizard to help identify orphans and hook them up or delete them.
then rebuild relationships.

Importing relationships was selected, and I've confirmed by recreating
the situation that they fail to import in the situation I described --
fer real!

Good advice -- you more or less described my plan. I got their data at
the end of the word day on Friday, and I'm about ready to dig in on
reconstructing their data. Wish me luck, because if I don't have them
up and running at 7:15 am on Monday, my name is mud.

Hi Everybody- I know that this is a really, really long post, but I wanted to try to give you as much background as possible. So here's a quick overview of the issues I'm asking for help with: 1.) I'm trying to create a many to many relationship, and I get the following Error when I try to enforce referential integrity.

Hi, As I gain knowledge through a lot of trial, error, and usenet posts.. I have a potentially odd question. I am using a commercial access application. It is a front-end / back end....multi-user app. with a lot of complex functionality (as you would expect from a commercial app). It doesn't have any relationships though.....is this odd???

Does anyone know if there's an easy way to export or copy the relationship structure from one mdb to a new one? The relationships in the db are time consuming to reproduce. I am trying to make a copy of a database including all the relationships, forms, queries and modules while still within the original database. This has to be a relatively automated process (button click). Any suggestions?

ACCESS 2000 Just a quick note to leave for future developers. This problem has been well documented in previous posts, but this little trick may help future poor souls. The error is when you try to import a database. I have learned that it is possible to cure corruption of databases by creating a new mdb, and importing all the objects from the misbehaving mdb into it.

hey.. i have 12 tables that are all identical. i imported from a spreadsheet that had 1 tab for each month in 05, and i've got each table with about 9 fields that are all identical (except for the data, of course). they each have a primary id which is autonumber. what i want to do is get it all into one table. i tried making a dozen different queries but i can't get one to pull from every table, despite having (poorly) defined a...

I'm curious about your opinion on setting relationships. When I designed my first app in Access I'd go to Tools/Relationships and set the relationships. Over time I'd go into the window and see relationship spaghetti....tables/queries all overthe place with lots of relationship lines between here and there. After that first app I didn't do relationships. If I had a query, I defined the relationship. Many of the times when I create a...

Warning to Access Developers about ACE. DON'T use multivalued fields (MVF) they are worse than LookUp fields and SubDatasheets, in fact they (MVFs) are a logical progression in the dumbing down that started with these abominations. Having seen and evaluated Access 2007 for a few months now I think this is a terrible product for developers. If you must use it use Jet 4 or SQL Server 2000 or IBM DB2* as the backend, depending upon your...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
