memory issues in ms access

Hi

I need some advice about ms-access limitations. i have some databases
written by others i have been working with that keeps crashing.
different on different computers, so it sounds like a memory thing. i
have some tables which are deveral hundred thousand records long and a
few tens of records wide. will this cause a problem? is there a
total max no records or database/file size? any links to websites
discussing this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

File size limit it 2GB. Compacting may help.

You did not mention your version, or what triggers the crash, but here's
some things to consider:

1. In Access 2000 and later, Name AutoCorrect causes *many* problems
including crashes. Partial list in:
Failures caused by Name Auto-Correct
at:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~allenbrowne/bug-03.html

2. In Access 2002 and 2003, there's a nasty bug where subforms can crash if
the foreign key field (i.e. the ones named in the LinkChildFields ) is not
represented by a text box on the subform. The text box does not have to be
visible, but it has to be present so the reference is to a member of the
Controls collection and not merely an AccessField type.

3. It's also essential to check you have the latest service pack for your
version of Office and also (at least as important) for JET 4.

4. There are also certain subqueries that will crash Access.

5. Code that fails to close what you opened can also cause memory leaks.

6. More suggestions on avoiding corruptions:

I posted a question some time back about accessing a char array as an array of words. In order not to overrun the char array, I padded it with enough 0x00 bytes to ensure that when accessed as words I wouldn't overrun the array. I was told that this is dangerous and that there could be alignment problems if, for example, I wanted to access the char array elements from non-even multiples of sizeof(int). For example, if I had the array: ...

I wrote a program to make sure that new would throw a bad_alloc exception if more memory was requested than was available. On my system, new allocates up to 2931 MBs of memory (I don't have that much, not even with swap) before throwing an exception. When the program tries to fill in the allocated memory with data, it is killed after using up the available memory. Does anyone know why the exception is not being thrown until well after...

Cross posting this question on the recommendation of an I have a .NET application that I am developing in C# I am loading information in from a dataset, and then pushing the dataset to a grid, or other controls depending on the particular form. I have and Access 97 DB that prints a report that has many pages, sometime about 800-1000 page, each page contains a colour picture along with text boxes. The pictures are displayed on the report but the DB only stores the path to the picture. On the reports detail sections On Print event I have the code (.Picture = ). Image path is the field that store the picture location. My problem is that when I send this report to the printer,...

Hello all. I am currently using an implementation of sysV shared memory. The entire shared memory is allocated is one continuous block of which I get the pointer to the head, everything should be done as offsets from this. At the moment I have two data structures, a head to a linked list which in it contains the pointer to the first element in the linked list( this is redundant as far as I can work out) and the list itself. The data...

We have a rather large vb.net winform app that multiple users access via sessions on s terminal server. We are running into issues where the application seems to be bogging down the terminal server and using up memory until the server seems to come to a craw. App is built with VS2003 1.1 Framework and isused to access a SQL Server DB. Uses Infragistics and Active Reports 3rd party controls. Are there any issues to take into account...

Hi Gurus, Our system is using SqlServer 2005 on XP.( On my machine, only this application access SQLServer.) The sqlserver memory is configured to 128MB (Min)~512 MB(Max) After our system get started, sqlserver takes about 100M memory. After the system runs for a while, the memory used by sqlserver goes up to 512MB. Then we exit our application and expect the memory usage of SqlServer could be dropped down to the min value....

If I have a large array 10,000+ elements then how do I reserve memory for this ? Currently I get a segmentation fault. Dynamic reservation is good, but allowing a chunk for the program is an acceptable alternative.

I am using the Redhat version of Linux and GNU C++. It is not clear to me whether this is a Linux issue or a C++ issue. I do not have this problem running the same program on Windows but tweaking the C++ code appears to fix the problem on Linux. I have a static array that is declared privately in one class and a structure that is declared publicly in another class. The program uses both classes. I was getting core dumps and traced...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules. He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms. Adolph will...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
