My favorite Notepad replacement is the very elegant, open source Notepad++. It is now in version 4.1.2. Just got the update today, but the last version was great! Notepad++ will pretty-print in many programming languages: Some may find that it suits all there source file editing needs. It'll even run command-line commands and launch other applications with the files being worked on.

I have always been a huge fan of Crimson Editor, however lately I have been using the free and lovely Komodo Edit for programming.

Thanks Barton, other editors I use on a regular basis are

NoteTab - has a nice looking Icon but I'm not sure it is as full featured as Notepad++

and

jEdit - does syntax highlighting, multiple files, has a macro language and you can write (and downloaded) extensions.

and

evolvEd - which I used to use before replacing it with jEdit, in fact I should uninstall it since it is still accosiated with lots of file extensions.
