Array mapping coding question...

I'm working on an application, where the same arrays would best be
looked at as 2D arrays in some parts of the program (like the I/O),
while it would be best to look at them as 1D arrays for the remainder of
the program (like the deep dark computational internals). This is no
problem in languages like FORTRAN whose EQUIVALENCE statement makes this
trivial, or in C where you simply pass the array as an argument, one way
in the calling program, and the other way in the called program.

The only semi-practical approach I've seen for VB is to carry the arrays
as 1D arrays, and to create a simple 2D subscript computing function
where 2D access is needed.

Perchance one of you superhacks out there have stumbled onto some way of
"fooling Mother Nature" to do what I need without throwing countless
function calls into a LOT of subscripting code.

Any ideas?
