Custom ASP control not rendering at design time

I am very green to all this.

I noticed that when I place my HtmlTextWriter rendering code in the RENDER
evernt, it appears at design time, at least after I set the defaut property.

But if I place this code in the RenderContents, it does not, I just see a
place holder with the control name.

I believe I need to use RenderContents to group the constituent controls
within a DIV tag group.

ANy suggestions wouild be veery much appreciated.
