ODBC Over VPN

I'm a network novice. I'm hopeful someone can help me with this problem:

I have a SQL Server setup and need all computers on our network to connect via ODBC. Anything on the physical network works fine. I am however having trouble connecting to the ODBC connection over our VPN from a remote workstation over wifi.

First, I'm not quite sure what my ODBC setting should be. Within the network we use this for the SQL server: SERVER1\SQLEXPRESS.

Is the same correct for our VPN installation? If not, would it be the IP (123.156.7.8\SQLEXPRESS), or something else?

Same thing with TCP/IP: Do We want to use a server name, ip address, or some combination?

Thanks for any/all advice.

I use the same ODBC reguardless of wheter I am on the network locally or over the VPN.
None of the aplications are local on my computer
I do, however, need to logon to the network once I have my vpn connection established....I think (it's been a while).
