Is there ANY data type other than varchar that is valid for local
variables and allows more than 8000 characters?

No - if you can give more details about what you need to do, someone may be

In SQL2000, no. In the upcoming version of SQL Server, SQL 2005 currently
in beta, the situation is radically different.

Thanks for the confirmation! I have a TSQL script that will read from a
table, concat. the results into a string (8000 characters), and then use
the extended stored procedure, xp_smtp_sendmail, to send the
concatenated string (variable) as a message. Unfortunately, I found that
xp_smtp_sendmail also has a limitation of 8000 characters for the
message ( probably just b/c of SQL Server's own varchar size
limitation). I appreciate the help! I will look forward to SQL 2005.
