SELECT issue

Hi all,
i am pretty new to ms-sql server 2000 so do not go to hard on this
one.
I am trying to retrieve information from a table that grows a couple
of hundreds new record every second.
When i issue a select statement i get a timeout expiration error from
the server; i guess what happens is that the server cannot gather
information on the table because new data is constantly being added.
is there a way to set the timeout to a higher value or perhaps a way
to tell the server to force the select disregarding the new records?
Thank you for your help.

How are you retrieving your data? Are you using EM or Analyzer or are
you calling from an application?

Thank you for you answer...
Either way (EM, Analyzer and application: crystal reports) won't
work...
the only thing that something seems to work without getting the
'timeout error' is SELECT COUNT(*) FROM TABLE_NAME
