converting data(varchar & float) to money

6
Hello again...

can someone tell me how to work around this error:

String or binary data would be truncated.

I am doing this:

update table1
set [Cost1] =
convert(varchar (13), cost2) *
convert(decimal (12,4), qty) *
convert(decimal (11,4), orders)

Cost1's data type is VARCHAR
cost2's data type is MONEY
qty's data type is FLOAT
orders data type is VARCHAR

It's giving me a headache!
thanks for your help!

Cost1's data type is VARCHAR - is not enough information it should be a number which is length of this column.

It looks like this column is not big enough to hold large number make it big like
Cost1 varchar(100)

Try to run following statement and see what length you are getting in return and what you have actually declared for Cost1 column

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Select max(len(convert(decimal (13.2), cost2) * convert(decimal (12,4), qty) *convert(decimal (11,4), orders)))
  2. From table1
Good Luck.
