How do you use a homemade device with python?

This may sound strange, but i want to make a finger print scanner that attatches to my computer. How do i use it if it's plugged in to, say, usb...
or something else? I've already made a compairison program that works great, so don't tell me i can't work with a home made device!!!

Ooooo! Please let me know if you get this working! Some more information you might want to give in order for people to help you: operating system, python version.
