stats on indexes

Hi All

I was just wundering what happens if we dont gather stats on indexes
will it effect the optimiser plans ?

Yes, stats on indexes affects execution plans, but if you're using 9i
oracle make a little sample on non-analyzed objects.

Depending on the option used to gather statistics Oracle often
automatically generates index statistics when you generate statistics
on the base table.

Example: analyze table bob.table_with_indexes compute statistiscs [OR
sample] will generate statistics for the table and all its indexes.
