HashTable Bug?

2 New Member
I am running into an issue with a HashTable where it isnt holding data in the order that I am adding it. I am pulling a SqlDataReader out of a table and looping through that to add the items to the HashTable. I have an ID field (autonumber) and a Sort Index field. I want the items to be stored in the hashtable by Sort Index. However, when I add the items into the hashtable they are getting all messed up. For example, when I have the following data:

ID SortIndex
6 1
3 2
8 3
2 4

The hashtable stores the items like this:

ID SortIndex
2 4
3 1
6 1
8 3

It appears that the HashTable is sorting them by the ID field (Key) instead of the SortIndex (Value). I am using the following statement to add the items to the HashTable:
ht.add(reader["ID"].ToString(), reader["SortIndex"].ToString());

I am using an IDictionaryEnumerator to iterate through the HashTable later to pull the values out, but looking at the watch window when adding the items to the HashTable shows the same messed up order.

Anyone have any ides why it is doing this?

Thanks!

HashTable enumerators will output by key.
Try using a NameValueCollection maybe? you can address by index there.

Although I would think you could use a DataTable to store your data then you can do whatever you want with them.
