How two systems communicate (Software Interface)

Hi
I'm working on a project of some packaging industry in which four
modules are under consideration i.e Inventory, Production, Sales and
Purchase.
The problem is that I don't know how two systems communicate with each
other. For example when purchase system receives inventory, it has to
update the inventory database. Similarly Customers tables is in Sales
system which has to be accessed by other modules/systems as well.
Plz help me how to give them interface. Whether it should be a DLL or
send this data to port where server is listening or some other
solution..
I'm working in .Net 2.0 and this application has to be deployed over
local intranet. (Database is not distributed)

Thanks
