I need to create a content management system for my application. I need to
use C# and ASP.NET for this development. I was wondering whether there would
be any good open source project which can be used with slight modifications.
Any pointers on this would be of great help to me. Thanks

Microsoft gives away a basic document and portal management solution, called
Windows Sharepoint Services. Runs on SQL. .Net Web Service API in addition
to a C# SDK. New version in the newest edition of Office.

The price is hard to beat. Free.
