process non-namespaced markup

Hi,

I want to process non-namespaced markup documents written in different
languages. I use e.g. with Xerces' XNI XMLDocumentHandler.
Unfortunately, some languages use the same element types. But I have to
treat them differently.

One approach would be to make the distinction by the root element type.
Are there more suitable approaches?

Add an xml:lang="xx" attribute to the root element start-tag.
If your system is processing the documents in a program, can it
detect the language externally (ie the files come from different
sources)? That way it could be automated.

Sorry for not making it clear: with languages I mean 'markup' languages
like Docbook, NITF etc.
