XQuery language help - CAST a element

Hi,
My issue is:
for $x in ($doc/a|b|c)
return
typeswitch ($y) ... case element(a): ................. $y/CertainChild
- is not recognized. Now how is XQuery supposed to know what type is
$y.. How do you do
a cast?
Paul
