Saving a BMP bitmap to file

I create a bitmap image of certain size using OnPaint and save it with
bitmap->Save but the file always saves as a 24 bit png file. I want a 1 bit
(black & white)bmp file. I can't seem to get the right methods or paramaters
to do this. Any help would be appreciated.
