Escape Characters

I have a friend who's asked me to help him find information leading to the creation of escape characters other than Windows defined ones in C/C++ he is trying to program his own text editor and needs to define escape sequences.

If anyone knows the general setup of an escape sequence in code please let me know.

Thanks,
Chris
