webclient credentials

Excuse my ignorance, but I am trying to use System.Net.Webclient to download
a file, and I can't get past a 407 authorization failure from the server. I
set the Credentials property to CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials, but
looking at a network trace this is not being used at all.

I am using a proxy server in my Internet settings. Am I doing something
wrong?
