Migrating from VC 6.0

I will be writing a new shareware application based on an existing app that
was developed in VC 6.0. It uses some MFC classes for the GUI portion, but
most of it is written in standard C (e.g., "malloc" for allocating memory,
etc.). This is (and always will be) strictly a stand-alone Win32 application
that has nothing to do with networking or distributed processing.

If I write the new application using VC++.NET, will I have to use the .NET
framework at all? I am assuming that if I do, it means redistributing the
framework to my customers, which I would like to avoid since it probably
means a lengthy downloads. My users may be running anything from Win98 on
up.

I guess I'm having a bit of a hard time grasping what the ".NET Framework"
really is from a technical standpoint, as what's on MS's web site tends to
talk too much in general "capability" terms and marketing-speak instead of
telling me exactly what is in there from a developer's viewpoint.
