Courier-imap authentication failure

I'm having a dreadful time getting a Postfix + Courier + Mysql mail
server configured in Mandrake Linux (9.1). I was wondering if someone
here might have some expertise and be willing to help.

Attempts to log on with an Imap mail client simply fails (hints that the
password may be incorrect).

I'd really appreciate whatever help I can get with this and would be
happy to provide more information. And if someone can tell me how to
start Mysql with logging I might know more.
