Hi,
Access has a nice feature that allows creation of indexes WITH IGNORE NULL
which means that records with null values are ignored in the index, so the index will be
shorter and faster to search.
Is there any equivalent for this in MySQL?

Is there a *simple* way to change a collumn from allowing null to not
null?
I just unchecked "allow nulls" in EM and the SQL it generates to do
this one thing is astonishing, create table, drop FKs, copy data, drop
table, rename new table, rebuild FKs...
I'm saving a lot of these changes to run on another database at a later
date but would rather not require a terrabyte device to store the
script :-)

Either I missed something, or ALTER TABLE does not have this
capability. Is there any way of doing it except
DROPping all constraints which mention this table,
EXPORTing the data,
DROPping the table,
reCREATEing the table without the 'NOT NULL property,
reCREATEing the INDEXes,
reloading the data,
redefining all of DROPped constraints
reCREATE the view which were marked inactive by the above.

I have people telling me that I should set up objects for my tables, but I
am finding the Null problem makes that difficult.
It isn't a big problem if you are not updating the table, but if you are -
it is a real problem if you have Nullable fields. You can't always use a 0
or -1 to tell whether a field is null and dates are another problem. I
don't want to use some obscure date in the future for something like
"EndDate" or...

One of our developers came across the fact that postgres is ignoring
spaces when sorting results from a query. We are using PGSQL 7.3.4 on
the backend. Is there something that needs to be set somewhere to for
the sort to not ignore spaces?

I am creating an index on a column which is 40% NULLS. The process seems
to run forever, though a count of the number of values runs in
milliseconds. This leads to the subject question: is there a way to

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
