i have Vista-32 on c:\ (64-bit PC). i will soon install Linux and Unix on (now vacant) d:\.
1. what criteria should i use to decide upon the Linux flavor, and where should i find the values for these criteria?
2. same question for unix.
3. what are the differences between Linux and unix? i understand that, for applications, they are the same -- and that the only difference lies in their kernels. can i have leads as to where to acquire authoritative education about the machinery and powers of the kernels?
if these questions are deficient or impoverished, please embellish with competence.
Thanks.

You can read distro (flavor) reviews on http://www.linuxquestions.org/reviews/index.php/cat/2
I don't know anyone who uses unix for personal computing. AFAIK linux and unix are based on the same kernel but have different applications.

Don't waste your time on Unix. I would recommend installing SUSE linux. It's a great OS with all the GUI delights your heart could desire. Check it out at: http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org

OOoh, ooooh, and a pact with Micro$oft to boot!
That is one reason I got away from Suse, because they folded to unbacked pressure, and quickly. Ubuntu or even Kubuntu are also good alternatives. Fedora, the Red Hat spinoff distro, is also good.
BTW, Linux is Unix is Linux. The commands are there and the premise is the same. For all intent and purposes, its all *nix. (IMHO).

Jeff
