File Associations

Is it possible to associate an application with a particular file type; e.g. open up .c, .cpp and .h files with Nedit when you double-click them from the File Browser.

On Windows its easy, but on a Solaris platform, I cannot find where it would be done, if at all!

Many thanks,

Andy.

Hi Andy!
I've never really used Solaris, but from my experience with Linux and other Unixes, I'd say you have to set the Desktop environment to do that somehow. Now, there are two standard Desktop Environments for Solaris: JDE and CDE.

If you're using JDE, which is built upon Gnome, the Instructions here, section "Mime-types & Associations", should do the job.

I can't find anything on how to achieve this with CDE, so maybe someone with more Solaris experience can help, if it doesn't work with my JDE suggestion.

Greetings,

When I installed Python 2.5 (on Windows XP) I left 2.4 in place "just in case". Today I decided to remove it. However after doing so (from the control panel) I found that Windows no longer knows about the Python file types and associations. Is this behavior expected, or was there something wrong with my installation? Is there a way to restore the file associations, short of reinstalling 2.5 or manually editing them?

Hi guys, Who knows how to restore VS 2k5 file associations, I've clicked Tools->General->"Restore File Associations" button but it doesn't work at all. I know Repair the whole product could fix it, but it costs too much time. So, if anyone could fix this issue please tell me asap. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I have a program wherein I want one behavior when a file is set as executable and a different behavior if it is not. Is there a simple way to determine whether a given named file is executable that does not resort to all the lowlevel ugliness of os.stat() AND that is portable across Win32 and *nix? I recently installed Visual Studio 2003, after having already installed VS 2005. Unfortunately, it took over all of the file associations. There is an option in Visual Studio 2005 to restore these associations, under Tools > Options Environment General. However, this button doesn't seem to do anything. Specifically, my SLN files were associated to VS 2003, and when I clicked this, this association didn't change. I even tried deleting...

Recently, I found that I had associated a file type to notepad by mistake. This file type (let's just say, it has the extension .xyz) wasn't supposed to be opened by notepad - actually, it wasn't supposed to be opened by anything at all. However, when I tried to remove the file type association like I could in previous versions of Windows, I found that I was meeting a dead end. I could change the program, no problem at all, but removing it...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
