How to display progress image while waiting?

I decided to set the loading image while entering the data in text box. After entered the data and courser moved to the second text box, I decided to check whether entered data is exist in database? while validating the data the image should rotate.

If possible, could you just use a .gif?
Create a .gif with the image rotating.
Switch the .gif into the loading space.

You could use a gif file as jkmyoung recommended, but that's gonna animate even when you don't want it.

Take a animated gif file (for animations when validating the data) and then extract the first frame by editing that image in the photoshop...( for still display when the data is not being validated).

Switch between images when data is validated and when it is not.
