The cut opeator (denoted by !) stops the backtracking back to it.

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. repeat,
  2.   possible_values(X),
  3.   do_something(X,Y),
  4.   check(X),
  5. !,
  6. continue_task(Y),
The cut in the above fragment prevents the backtracking to
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. do_something(X,Y)
in case of failed
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. continue_task(Y)
.

_____________
Hint
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. PREDICATES
  2.   nondeterm repeat
  3. CLAUSES
  4.   repeat.
  5.   repeat if repeat.
  6.
