Server's view of JAR, WAR, EAR?

P: n/a
I was looking at XFlow an OS workflow project and noticed their
application was packaged as a JAR instead of a WAR even though it has
a WEB-INF and the typical ejb deployment descriptors. I was wondering
if a server will treat a JAR different from a WAR even though the
content is the same? For example, does it automatically load a JAR?

Any insight would be appreciated.
