Method not found? It should be ... syntax appears correct?

I'm getting this method ...

org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile [snip].java:238:
Method getParameterMap() not found in interface
javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest.

.... with this source code ...

java.util.Map parametersMap = request.getParameterMap();

.... using Tomcat 3.3

I was initially trying to get a HashMap out, but wasn't sure whether
it was failing to find the method because I was specifying an invalid
return type? I thought overloading only happened with params though
and not return types. Anyway, this is the exact return type listed in
the API for the version of J2EE that I believe is accurate for this
version of Tomcat (J2EE 1.3), so I'm utterly stumped. Can anyone
suggest what's going wrong?

And I've found out why ... Tomcat 3.3 doesn't use J2EE 1.3, it uses
Servlets 2.2 and I eventually found a Javadoc on the Java site.
getParameterMap() is not valid in Servlets 2.2 unfortunately, so I had
to do a getParameterNames() and run through them, getting the
parameter value each time ... awkward, but the same result near
enough.
