Apache .htaccess Hides Folders

P: n/a
Using Apache2 with: Options +Indexes

When I limit access to a subdirectory by putting a .htaccess file inside
of it the subdirectory disappears from the parent's directory tree. If I
manualy type in the name I get the expected authentication prompt. Is
there a way to allow all users to see the subdirectory in the tree but
limit access to the subdirectory's contents?

TIA
