Is this code line valid?

Hello,

I was checking some CSS code where I have the following CSS code line:

vertical-align: expression("middle"); /* IE-Only property */

My IDE (Visual Studio) is not accepting this. It says expression is
not valid for vertical-align.

Do I need this code line?
Is this code line valid?

Thanks,
Miguel

That's strange, but it's probably meant to do what the comment (obscurely)
suggests: to make IE and only IE see vertical-align: middle. The reason for
this remains unclear.
Do I need this code line?
Who knows? Surely we cannot tell that from the line alone.
Is this code line valid?
Of course not, as the comment suggests.

Does it even work? I haven't tried putting it in a page yet.

Do you mean to say that code is only valid if it works in all browsers?

What is it that specifically _invalidates_ any code?

I'm not being facetious--this CSS stuff is brand new to me.

Specifications can be found at <http://w3.org>, and a validator as well.

CSS specifications define
a) a grammar (syntax) and
b) a vocabulary (e.g. allowed selectors/properties/values/@-rules).

The CSS _grammar_ (as defined in e.g.
<http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/grammar.html>) would syntactically allow an
expression function with a string value. But no CSS spec _vocabulary_
does yet define a function named expression.

expression pseudo-function is a Microsoft extension.
But it does beg the question:
Why not just use the W3C standard equivalent instead?

Can't say without seeing it in context.
