Its built in to CSS. See the Colors section of the CSS 2 specification.

Deprecated in CSS3, IIRC.

Are they explicitly marked as deprecated, or are they just omitted in the
draft? Does their deprecation mean it's wrong to use them? Why?

Not so much "wrong", but "we've already decided this isn't a good
idea, and may scrap support for it altogether later".

The CSS3 Color Module is currently only a Candidate Recommendation, the
replacement for System Colors - the 'appearance' property - appears in the
CSS3 Basic User Interface Module, also only a Candidate Recommendation, and
currently enjoys zero support from browsers.

It might be possible to move to it after another half decade or so ...
maybe.

Mozilla uses the 'appearance' property for quite some time now:

Keep in mind, though, that support is not only browser-dependent, but
also dependent on the OS or desktop manager. I haven't checked Mac, but
Linux is hit-and-miss for sure. Gnome and KDE can give rather different
results.

I wouldn't really advise using system colors unless it is on an
intranet, where the browsing environment might actually be controlled.

Sure, that is the idea :-)
It is a web based application to be used on an intranet env
and as users really insist with its look and feeling I think let
them choose fonts and colors will make the process more easy

Thanks all, for the great responses!
