I was confused about your statement on z/OS versus OS/390, so I elicited
the following comment from one of the DB2 z/OS architects:
'Responding to your comment, "It appears that DB2 for OS/390 and z/OS
may be going in separate directions for the first time, but I am not
exactly sure. In the past versions, they
shared the same set of manuals."
Just as OS/390 continued the operating system from MVS, the new
operating system is called z/OS, which is now in its fourth release, and
getting out the fifth one soon. The final support date for OS/390 is
September 2004, and the new DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 requires new
hardware in the zSeries machines and new operating system with at least
z/OS V1R3. If you need to stay on older releases of hardware or
operating system, then you'll need to stay on an older release of DB2 as
well.
Here is the DB2 UDB for z/OS web page:

Here is the z/OS web page:

Click on Support on either of those pages to check on more information.
There is a lot more information available on the DB2 UDB for z/OS page
as well.
Here are the z/OS and OS/390 end of service dates:

We share a lot across the DB2 UDB family. For SQL the key book is IBM®
DB2 Universal Database™ SQL Reference
for Cross-Platform Development Version 1.1

Materialized Query Tables will be available in DB2 for z/OS version 8, which
is not yet available. But you read about What's new at:
