How to get clients to pay on a timely manner?

What are some suggestions to help get clients to pay in a timely manner? We have office and overhead costs that need to be covered and would like to make sure that there is revenue coming in regularly to meet these costs.

Whenever possible I arrange to bill clients on a monthly basis. It is also important to set the terms of payment in advance and even make it part of any contract.

I set out the terms of payment in the contract but I don't always get to choose them. Some clients operate under standard conditions. For instance, one of my current clients has a 60 days from date of invoice policy. There is no way for me to get around that. However, they pay promptly on those terms.
