It is the shift left operator, it shifts an integer value left by the given number of binary digits, shifting left by a binary digit is the same as adding a 0 in the units column so 10 shifted left 1 place is 100; mathematically equivalent to times by 2 in the same way that you can effect times by 10 in our normal number system, decimal, just by adding a 0 to the end of the number.

For example if in your code y have the value 0x05a9 then x would have the value 0x16a4.

There is a shift right operator >> too that shifts binary digits to the right.

It depends on what object type x and y are. If the are an int/float/double than it is a mathematical process having to do with the bits being shifted. If they are a stream type then 2 is being put into y and x = y.

operators can be overloaded. It just matters what objects are involved in the operation.
