ssh in c++

4 New Member
Hi,

I am writing an application in C++ that should be able to connect to a remote computer through ssh command. I have tried using the following technique:
sprintf(filepath,"%s%s","ssh -X ",host);
inFile1 = popen(filepath,"r");
but I am getting the following error message:
tcsetattr: Input/output error. So what can I do?

I'm actually tring to do the very same thing. I need to send a bunch of data files to a remote pc, then run a program on that machine via ssh. I can tranfer all of the files and whatnot, and it appears some of my actions after the ssh work fine, but the 5th line doesn't appear to work, so the 7th line can't work. Is there anything glaringly obviously wrong I'm doing? Thanks in advance.

@mkiveni - system() may be the way to go, depending if it works for ssh. It does most cmd line functions really easily, though it can be a bit tricky with some more complicated things.

  1.         system("cd Desktop/Branden/usr/src"); //Goes to dir with *.data files
  2.         system("mv *.data Data"); //Copies files into own Dir
  3.         system("scp -r Data usrname@host:Data001"); //Moves entire dir to remote pc
  4.         system("ssh usrname@host"); //connects via ssh to same pc
  5.         system("cp graphall.cpp Data001"); //copies a file from the pwd to Data001
  6.         system("cd Data001"); //Changes dir to Data001
  7.         system("root -b graphall.cpp"); //executes the "graphall.cpp" file within root
  8.         system("mv -b *.jpg Backup"); //Backs-up jpgs created by line 7
  9.         system("mv -b *.data Backup"); //Backs-up data files

You cant do it this way.
As you doa system cal to conect to a box using ssh then you should to the copy in the same sommand and not as a separate command(Using a diffrernt system call)

@BJSievers: Perhaps you think that your cp command on line 5 will execute on the remote computer, not the local computer, which is wrong; system() calls don't simply emulate the user typing input on the keyboard, instead they send commands to the shell in which the executable is running. To run commands on the remote system, append that command to ssh argument list, read the manpage of ssh.

I would really use a shell script to do all this, just call your script from within C++ if you need to; you're only using shell commands anyway and you'll then have the added advantage that you can modify your commands and filenames without recompiling the program.

@mkiveni: the -X switch enables X11 forwarding. I don't think this is what you mean to do, is it?

Alrighty, so I changed a bunch of my code around, and now the ssh call runs a shell script on the remote PC. When on this PC, it will execute without problem, however, if I call
ssh user@location ./shellfile.sh
it gives me error:
root: command not found
the same error that calling
ssh user@location root file.cpp
gives. Any idea why or workaround? root is installed on remote pc and not local pc, if that makes any difference.

thanks again,
Branden
