How to convert 8bit color image to 16 bit color one?

16 bit - 565 (5 bits for the red,6 for green and 5 for blue).
Assume that the source bitmap was already loaded in in one buffer - bmpBuf with pixel format 332 (3 bits for red, 3 for green and 2 for blue). Dimensions are bW - width and bH - height. The format of the function is:
void convertBMP(unsigned char* bmpBuf, unsigned short* destination, int bW, int bH).
I suppose, I have to use bit operations!!!
Need help!!!!!

Hi. I am not familiar with this format. What file format is this?
I know of 24 bit files (3 x 8 bits) or 8 bit files (with a color map).
